I'll get this out of the way right at the beginning, there's nothing wrong with these magnets, they are grade N52 neodymium magnets, (a nickel, iron, neodymium alloy) they are powerful enough to break fingers, or cause severe contusions, always be wary of their proximity to other magnets or thick metal objects.I see everyone is going "these pieces of junk come from China" so that automatically relegates these magnets to a poor quality status.I've got news for the uninformed, China produces 95% of the worlds rare earth element neodymium, The magnets are made in China simply because they have an abundance of neodymium ore. Enough said there.Shattered magnets and sparks. The inexperienced dealing with neodymium magnets have to get this thought deeply ingrained in the brain. NEODYMIUM MAGNETS ARE NOT SOLID FORGED PIECES OF METAL, they do not have the strength of say a 1-inch solid iron cube. The reason for this is very simple. The three components of the magnet, neodymium, boron, and iron are powdered. through a process called "Sintering" this powder is heated and compressed, but not to the point to where the heat creates liquefaction, that is, to the point to where the mix melts, heated and compressed the powders form a solid object, but a object that is somewhat similar to a sandcastle, it takes on a solid form, but under impact conditions or stresses the magnets can come apart in fractured pieces, they are not melted together but simply compressed together, and this bond can be broken easily with high impact forces. A word of note, if your neodymium magnet shatters, you can't glue them back together, each individual fragment once separated from the body of the magnet simply obtains its own north-south magnetic orientation, once fragmented each fragment now becomes a separate magnet, when you try to put them together you don't get one magnet with a singular north-south pole, you get a bunch of little shard magnets each with its own different magnetic field orientation, so the magnet will not work collectively, too many poles of opposition exists for it to have a symmetrical magnetic field, so don't bother trying to put it back together.The inexperienced user typically discovers just how fragile the magnets are when set in too close a proximity to another magnet or iron source.Here's how you prevent a lot of chipping and cracking. Simply take duct tape, and wrap about 3 to 4 layers around the entire magnet surface, when the magnets come together or get attracted to an iron source the duct tape helps absorb the impact, it is the sharp snap when two unprotected magnets come together that is primarily responsible for the magnet shattering.This is a very good product, I've used all the best, CMS, Allied Magnetics, and a host of others and these magnets compare quite easily in quality to the more expensive magnets, with one exception, they're not as pretty, but they do function just the same as the higher end magnets.The first set of neodymium magnets I've ever owned shattered, I let bare metal surface magnets slam into each other due to close proximity with each other, USING NEODYMIUM MAGNETS IS A LEARNING CURVE, DON'T LET YOUR CHILDREN SIMPLY GRAB THEM AND GO OFF ON THEIR OWN, THEY NEED TO BE TRAINED ON JUST HOW DANGEROUS THESE MAGNETS CAN BE WHEN MISHANDLED.So watch out when the kids get their paws on them, whether adult or child, expect to get soft tissue injuries, and in the worst case, broken fingers.Please be careful, and watch out for your children when they use them.There is a video attached that shows you what is possible with even small neodymium magnets.
