Atlas of Drosophila Morphology

Please do not buy this book, it is clearly not the original version. I have worked with Drosophila for more than 10 years. I have seen the book in previous labs and this is not the real version. The quality of images is poor, printed in normal paper with what it seems it is a house printer. This is a scam. They are selling a cheap pdf printed as the original one.

As an undergrad in a fly lab this has been a great reference.

Nice pictures for identification of various mutants. Important for our work.

As a beginner, I found this book extremely useful. The pictures are very clear and easy to comprehend. I especially like the graphic illustrations of the balancers. It helps a lot when I try to decide which balancer serves better for each recombinant.

The sketches in Lindsley and Zinn of what different markers looked like were useful, but the full color big pictures that are in this book are fabulous, using new technology to achieve great crispness and depth. The book also provides information on the temperature and age dependence of the markers and their expressivity. This is an essential resource for any serious Drosophila lab. My group members love it.

The highlight of this book are the photographs of flies that provide high resolution and complete focal depth of the animals. Thus, all the details of the cuticle structures of wild type and mutant flies can be clearly discerned. The representation of eye colors in various mutants is also reasonably realistic, and it contains the first images that I know of where Moiré is clearly depicted. The images start with the different body parts of wild type flies as well as larvae and pupae. The major part is dedicated to all common (and some less common) dominant and recessive visible markers. A few examples of different species are also included although some additional important ones could have been added to that. It is also very useful to be able to look up the descriptions of all major balancer chromosomes, which include their markers and graphical depictions of their inversions, in one place. Occasionally information on their properties is included but could have been more thorough (e.g., lethal phase, which one to choose) or referenced.A beautiful (and useful) "coffee table book" for the fly lab.

This is a great book covering the major morphological structures, identification and markers for the fruit fly. It is a must-have for any fly room. Excellent quality, and used daily.

Outstanding. Extremely useful for Drosophila labs, particularly with students with no previous experience working with fruit flies.
