a superb boxset
This is a review for the Complete Season 1-7 Deluxe Collector's Blu-ray Box Set (exclusive to Amazon). It's a fantastic product - presenting not only the TV show in its entirety in HD, but also a vast collection of 'extras' in a stunning case. Everything is housed in a sturdy and attractive slip-case; and within that is a large hardback 'volume'. Open that up and you're treated to several pages of glossy colour images of the main cast (akin to a photo album) - and inserted within each page are the Blu-ray discs. At the back of the volume are a bundle of 'extras' - including photos, letter-headed paper, a detailed guide to the show, a map of the office, and a host of other titbits. This is perfect for major fans of "Mad Men".There are 23 disc - presenting all 7 seasons (consisting of 92 episodes) - as well as many special features. The show is about a leading advertising agency in New York City, set in the 1960's. The story focuses on the business of the agency, and especially on the personal lives of the main characters - in particular, Don Draper (Jon Hamm). It depicts the changing social and cultural landscape of the time - especially 'race' and gender relations. Overall, it's well-written and brilliantly acted. Additionally, it makes use of the music from that period - and offers a fantastic soundtrack. This is superbly designed product - and is one of the finest Blu-ray boxsets I've seen. The only negative issue I have with it is that, by locating the discs within the pages, it's not always easy to remove a disc (and they could get scratched). Notwithstanding this limitation, I highly recommend this item. It's a very entertaining show - and is rightly recognised as one of the 'best ever'.

Unarguably one of the best series ever! I am keeping this box set for my Children and maybe??? Grandkids!!
I am probably one of the last of "The Mohicans" to watch the series "Mad Men". I struggled with the first few episodes as it garnered more awards but just did not get it. When I got this DVD collection and I started watching, I could not sleep for several nights. This I now completely, unabashedly agree is one of the greatest series I have watched, well since "Breaking Bad". It's still a mystery how I missed it in the first place. However, with so many extraordinary series out there by very talented producers, it would take an early retirement to keep up. The Set Decor, the Clothes, the conversations? Absolutely timeless. Everyone should own this if they share the nostalgia of the way things were in the 60's/70's. I wish I could be paid to watch them. Now that would be the best job in the world for me :)

DELIVERED WITH PANACHE, SO MUCH TO THINK ABOUT
The 1960's world of Madison Avenue's Don Draper, he a major force in the world of advertising. At his best he is brilliant, but now increasingly a loose cannon. Seemingly a law unto himself, he is late to meetings, generally abrasive - several clients and colleagues alienated. Gradually we learn the smooth exterior is a facade - he haunted by memories, life built on a lie. Will he find inner peace or suffer the fate depicted in the impressive opening title sequence...?Here is style in abundance - critics ecstatic, awards plentiful. Presented so convincingly (and disturbingly) is the era and the attitudes that prevailed. A man's world this, those portrayed determined to exploit to the full The American Dream - their profession dedicated to convincing the gullible affluent they cannot do without the products so flamboyantly advertised. What a boon, television! A chance to invade the home with their persuasive sales tactics.MAD MEN is set evocatively in memorable times that included the assassination of President Kennedy and man's landing on the moon. So much is changing. Protests abound. A march on Washington demands coloureds be treated as equal. Women at work insist on proper recognition. Gays campaign for justice. Opposition grows to the war in Vietnam. The new generation questions long established values, hippies demonstrating for freedom of expression. All characters portrayed here will need to adjust - lifestyles threated, only the fittest (and most devious?) to survive.24 discs. Over 4200 minutes' viewing, not counting many commentaries and several hours of bonus features. The box set indeed represents a marathon binge-watch.I emerged from it all with reactions unexpected - the bonuses having proved far more absorbing than the show itself. Despite fine acting, MAD MEN contains few people to like - so many characters shallow, obsessed with the acquisition of wealth. For them image is all - lives full of show, emotions so brittle (liver and lungs probably impaired). Increasingly boring are flimsily contrived encounters resulting in sex, participants decorously draped. The final season could have been better handled, although it does contain one of show's best sequences of all. Totally unexpected and delightful comes a declaration of life's greatest assets - a concept totally removed from the materialism dominating hitherto.Any true substance is confined to the bonuses - the moving tribute to forgotten freedom fighter Medgar Evers; in full, Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech; the lid off how the tobacco industry promoted a habit increasingly recognized as so harmful; the part advertising played in the 1964 Johnson-Goldwater Presidential campaigns: women seeking a fair deal in the workplace. Much else besides. There are true eye-openers here, particularly for viewers not around at the time. Many will be grateful for progress made since, saddened even now we have so much to learn. This very day not all women at work have equal pay, are campaigning against sexual harassment. "TODAY'S PACKAGING IS TOMORROW'S TRASH." Only now do we accept there is a real problem, but this was a slogan at a 1970 demonstration in America, the protest by those concerned about the threat to the planet.MAD MEN helps us to see beyond the hype, encourages us to be more aware about tactics employed by advertisers. Ironically the box set itself is adorned with an exaggerated claim: "MAD MEN IS THE GREATEST TV DRAMA OF ALL TIME." Really?Three stars for the show. Five for the bonuses.

Absorbing Slow-burner
This coffee book set is beautifully presented. Yes, the disks are difficult to extract but as we watch one season at a time I simply take out the three disks for the season we are busy watching and put them in a spare plastic DVD case for the time we are watching that season. My boyfriend and I have just finished the first season and we loved it. Mad Men is beautiful to behold and intellectually mesmerising.Season 2 - Excellent! We start to learn more about each character and see some of them start to evolve.I will come back to update this review as we finish each season.

A slow burner with plenty of sub plots
I bought this as a Christmas present for my husband as we were just finishing another box set and wanted something to watch as a backup when the usual tv had nothing to offer. This is a change to the fast-pace of "24" and "breaking bad". More of a slow burner. We are 2/3 through season 1 of 7 and so far so good. The archaic attitudes as to how men and women are expected to behave, and how certain behaviours are deemed acceptable, whether rightly or wrongly, are laugh out loud funny. This is more out of incredulity of the situations that are cleverly portrayed by the brilliant casting. Well recommended.

Don't know why I waited so long...
So happy to finally own this! I noticed people complaining about not being able to play them in Canada? Not sure what that was about, sounds like an error by the shipper, not sure why it can't be rectified. The media is in NTSC format so it's all systems go. Excellent show, within a week I'm already into season 4. Good watching!
