Why A NAS?
It was delivered earlier than expected and well packaged. It was easy to assemble and with some experienced assistance it was up and running in a little more than an hour.Understand that now (after installation) is when the real work and thinking will come into play. You have to decide how to setup your data, pictures and videos. If you have worked with data bases in the past, it will be easy but time consuming but if not read up on the structure of simple data bases (which isn`t too complicated) or get some help from a friend. Now it`s time to move all of your data over to this fantastic device. If you have your data already organized, then it`s just a matter of copying it like any other file and pasting it to a location on your new NAS!UT-OH, NOW IS THE TIME TO REMEMBER WHY YOU PURCHASED THE NAS. Was it because the device you had all your data on is running out of space and is also running slower and slower? Or was it because you wanted to let other people look at the videos, pictures or even documents you have without having to spend time sending them to each person? Yes, it allows the other people to connect on the WEB to see what you will allow! That was the job of a server in the past, and now is the job of a cloud location (which you pay for) but as the cloud space fills up, the cost goes up for extra space! Well guess what will allow you to do what you want without paying the monthly costs; you guessed right, it should be a NAS!A NAS can be as large (in storage as you want) and you pay once for it except for Maintenace! If you purchase quality, it will last for a long time (usually 5 years or more) and if set up correctly, it will tell you when Maintenace is needed.I know this is a long answer to the Amazon request of "How was the item" but as an old electronics instructor in the US Airforce, and a retired IBM'r I have been a user of all the older methods mentioned above and the NAS is my choice for the future.

Lot of services, this one is more that a NAS device
I've been using WD NAS for a long time now, mostly for file services. Lately I decided I also want to use a media server. WD has the Twonky server, that is "OK", but time to time somehow it hangs. I needed more space, so i decided to give Synology a chance. I am not disappointed!First of all for some reason it was cheaper to buy the station itself, and the disks separately. The disk install was just a piece of cake, it really did worth the saving. The configuration of the disks logical, only a few clicks and it was good to go. From there on you basically log in into a server console, and you can install packages like Media Server, DHCP server, auth services, Git server, Apache, and so on. These a services are usually easy to configure, and you can start using them right after installation. So far I did not have any issues, I am very happy with this purchase.

Why didn’t I switch to Synology sooner?
I’ve been using and recommending a different brand of NAS for more years than I care to admit. Sure I was occasionally grumpy, when “upgrades” changed or removed a convenient option (like WebDav, or the shutdown menu option), but on the whole, I had no complaints.I recently upgraded to this Synology NAS and my old default brand seems substandard by comparison. The ease of setup and administration is simple. Nothing forced me to angrily fire up ssh while muttering, “Next, I’ll get my hammer”. Everything I wanted to do was logically presented in a pretty interface. The built-in app options run the gamut. There are hundreds of add-on packages available.Honestly, the capabilities far outstrip my needs, but I love it anyway.

Easy To Set Up
This drive was easy to set up and get running for us. I recommend watching some of the YouTube videos on it. It will answer questions that may arise. I had this up and running in about 30 minutes, most of which was watching videos as I went along so I didn't miss anything. Very happy with my purchase.

Good looking NAS for basic use
This is a very good unit for what it is intended to be, a basic storage device or beginner NAS.It did run Plex for me with no issues at home on my local network and all other use cases were good while on my local network, but this unit gets to be a little slow when you start to demand more of it, especially when compared to the DS 923+ which is what I recently bought to replace it, don’t get me wrong. I’m going to keep this as a back up and I will upgrade the hard drives and use it to back up my 923+ but the difference in speed between the two is night and day. Sad to say because this is such an attractive unit
