Good question, allow me to clarify the three types of materials used for repairing base damage to skis. P-Tex is indeed for surface scratches and gouges that do not go all the way to the core material of the ski. These are the simplest of repairs that are DIYers like to take on. P-Tex works great in the base repair gun that is mentioned in this listing, but you can also just light the end with a lighter or torch and drip into scratches. The second material is base repair sticks; for this you should use a special gun or soldering iron to melt the stick into the cleared out hole, then even out with a metal scraper tool. The third specialized material is called metal-grip and is used to repair the base area that is in contact with the metal edge of the ski, it also requires the gun or soldering iron to melt it. The varying chemical properties of ski parts require these three different types of repair materials so that you get the proper adhesion to get your skis back into shape. the skimender pistol is total junk. I bought one and the material it lays down just comes right off.

This product is P-Tex only (but without paraffin) and does not stick to your edges or base. The material that you will need first (to adhere to edges and base) is called copolymer. It is usually sold in coils and has to be melted with the welder/sodering iron that. After you repair with the copolymer, then you would use the ptex (either drip candles or the gun style that we sell here in 11mm). Best of luck to you.
