Best-value bright external monitor for filmmakers

I was an early adopter of the first Shogun when it came out, which was also my first external monitor for shooting video. At the time, recording capability in the same unit was really important, because cameras couldn't deliver. Today, cameras record internally at decent codecs, so it's all about the monitor - and even there, the one big flaw of the Shogun was its brightness, measured in "nits." That's where the Bestview R7 comes in: it's more than DOUBLE the brightness of the old Shogun, and on par with the brightness of the newest Atomos monitors. The R7 has all the "advanced" features that are, by now, the bare minimum we want in a monitor. Among them is the ability to apply your camera's LUT onto its flattened log footage, that otherwise would make it difficult to judge exposure, etc. Many monitors even today lack this feature, though you need to be careful about double-applying a LUT if your camera has its own LUT viewing features ("Gamma Assist" on Sony Alpha, for example).Atomos had boasted of its menu system, and while it's still one of the best, Bestview has done a surprisingly good job at making the touchscreen interface fairly intuitive. It's a smart decision to make the buttons and menu items mostly textual, instead of having to memorize icons (and learn what they each do). When it comes to the physical enclosure, I actually like that it's plastic, to keep the weight down. It's durable enough. I also like that there is an HDMI output - other monitors skimp on that. The included cold shoe mount is OK, and I actually like that it's limited to 180-degree rotation, so that it stays level with the back plane of the camera. But I'll definitely be adding an extension arm that I already have, for maximum flexibility - and I wish that the R7 had more 1/4"-20 mounting holes, on all sides. Similarly, there's no place to mount a sun shade.I didn't find the Hotkeys to be as usual as they could be, limited to a few shortcuts that I'm least likely to use. But there is a USB port for firmware updates, and seeing how Bestview has already delivered a firmware update so soon after launch, it looks like they'll be listening to customers and improving the product over time. Now that I'm shooting in at least 4K resolution all the time, with razor-thin depth of field, nailing focus is more important than ever. before It's just not possible on those tiny little screens built into cameras. So, this product is a small investment to make, if it saves your priceless footage from simple mistakes that are normally hard to see.

Feature packed with undeniable value!!!

I’ve been very impressed with this lovely little monitor. I wasn’t sure if a 7 inch monitor would be too large for gimbal work but after several weeks of use I can safely say this monitor works great in a number of setups. It fits into my gimbal with plenty of room. It fits in my handheld rig with rails and can be configured in multiple positions to accommodate a shoulder rig, handheld or tripods. As I use RGB waveforms for all of my editing I prefer to use it for setting exposure too. The R7 includes a number of useful exposure tools but the waveform is by far my favorite and to have that feature on a monitor at this price point is an incredible value. Also the ability to upload my preferred LUTS for my camera profiles directly onto the monitor had been a life saver. I would recommend this monitor to anybody on a budget looking for pro features in an inexpensive package.

Makes a world of difference.

This monitor is a game changer. Beautiful image, bright enough to see outside, and has a great set of features. My two wishes are and dc output and for the scopes to be bigger and easier to see.

Cold shoe mount makes product worthless!

Unfortunately I will be returning this product. The cold shoe mount is garbage and will not tighten to keep the monitor vertical and upright. Kinda interesting that the day it was delivered, I get a email from the seller (Gimbalpro) with a list of all the things that may be missing or not working properly. Geeze really? Sure enough... the cold shoe mount was one of the items. They offer a a resolution of small amount of money they will credit for me to go buy a new mount from somewhere else. I wanted a fully working product. This is not. Well, I emailed and it could not be delivered to them. That was a whole lot of help. Save yourself the headache and don’t buy this. If you do.... just know that you gotta buy a real working cold shoe mount in addition. Overall though... it’s a good feature rich value for the money.

Incredible Video Monitor - Improves My Ability to Shoot

This is the first video monitor that I have ever used, and so far I am impressed.Ever since I started shooting video with mirrorless cameras, it's been a hassle to use the built-in monitor. My cameras (the Sony A7rIII and Fujifilm X-T3) both have screens that only tilt slightly and don't flip up. As a result, it's been a challenge to film, especially when using the cameras on a gimbal or attempting to vlog. A monitor has been necessary for my videos, but I wasn't quite ready to pull the trigger on more expensive, name-brand monitors. Luckily, Best View has made a monitor that seems comparable to the pricey versions. So far, these are the features that I am finding the most useful:- it's a 7 inch monitor, which is just the right size- although it's made of plastic, it feels very solid in the hands, without feeling too heavy- the ability to apply a LUT on flat log footage- a touchscreen interface and intuitive menu that function WAY better than my cameras- 4K HDMI input and output without any transmission delayAll in all, this video monitor is a great addition to my filmmaking kit. I use it while shooting handheld, run and gun shooting as well as shooting in a studio setting. It helps me nail a perfectly focused and well-composed shot every time.
