Q: what's the different between the one with the external power adapter and the one without?

With my USB 3 Ports on my Acer TC-780 front panel ports, I can power all four ports with thumb drives. When I tried the same with a Dell U473D Slim Multimedia Keyboard with 2 USB Port I had to use the pawer supply that came with the HB-UMP3 4-port Powered USB hub. I would advise getting the powered hub because you don't know if your USB port will support enough devices without the power supply unit.

actually, while you can theoretically link 127 devices, there is a limitation to the depth or hiearchy you can link hubs (which is 7). In many systems (particularly windows) you may find that the hub controller in the pc can consumer 2 or 3 of those tiers. While that's likely not an issue for most, I've run into a problem when I link a 7 port hub into a KVM switch -- I get an error message stating that the system can not see some devices (because the actual 7 port hub actually contains 2 usb controllers and the kvm switch contains 2 controllers). Suffice it to say -- this is a rare occurrence -- just don't daisy chain a bunch of 4 port hubs together if you run out of ports -- get a hub with more ports

Q: How long is USB3 cable?

measured mine at about 1 meter. I really like this thing. The two red high-power only ports are oriented 180 degrees from the USB 3.0 ports so you physically can't mix them up either.

Q: Will using a 7 usb 3.0 hub ultimately put next to no strain on my motherboard because power is being generated from the AC adapter?

I 5 Gigabyte Motherboard with powerful Intel processor, 16 Ram has moor paver than standard PC. I don't think the hub would help. However, some software might. I will look this up in the later date.

Only needed if you are an input device maniac. For hardrives it halves the speeds.

Don't expect full hard drive speeds. I have two T7's connected and they average about 300MB per sec. read and write. Since I am using them for some basic storage of clip art the speed is fine for me.Use this if you have loads of input devices. I had three hubs going and this replaced them all with this one device. All gadgets are working great. Especially handy for those pesky USB dongles for keyboard and mouse. I love the power buttons. I keep hard drives off when not using them. This hub is also really helpful when you have a device that needs direct connection to your Mac. Plug everything else into the hub.I am using 11 of the 16 ports with no issues so far.

Good, simple, affordable.

Excellent Hub

I have used this now for a few weeks. The build quality is sturdy and it has a long power cable which allows for much needed flexibility. The lighted on/off switches are so very useful. Just what is I needed in a hub.
