Rigol MSO1104Z-S KIT - 100 MHz MSO with Waveform Gen. and Logic Probe (4 Analog, 16 Digital Channels)

A very nice tool for visualizing signals and exploring how circuits work, as well as diagnosing problems, as long as you realize its limitations, such as maximum sample rate (1 GSa/sec, single channel; half or quarter of that for two or three/four channels) and rise time. (The specified rise time is a "calculated rise time" [3.5 nsec for the 100 MHz 'scope], not a measured rise time, so the actual rise time might be worse.)Note that using eight or 16 channels of the logic analyzer takes over one or two of the four analog channels. The logic analyzer probes are good, not great. The grabbers are fairly small and of the same design, but not as quite as small as, E-Z-HOOK Micro-Hook XKM-S grabbers. At first, the labels on the logic probe leads look very nice (colored numbers 1-16 and 16 grounds), but the labels are not well attached and will likely fall off soon.The signal generator is nice to have, although not as flexible as a separate signal generator. However, for a hobbyist / ham, it seems adequate.As many have said, the encoder for the main (multi-function) control knob (labeled "Intensity," but also used to control many other parameters) should have detents, because the small knob makes it very easy to overshoot a desired position, or alter a position when removing fingers from the knob. I will probably replace the encoder on my 'scope.Overall, a very nice 'scope.

Note that it comes with all features unlocked (which you previously would have had to pay extra for). The scope comes fully functional (no need to enter any codes), and with the signal generator it's easy to route signals to itself (all needed cables included) to test out the analog capabilities.As someone who has used much older generation scopes, the ability to push a button ("auto") to have everything dialed in to view a waveform is phenomenal. I've not yet used the digital head, but I expect that will be my primary use for debugging digital circuits. For the money, it is an extremely good value, and just what I need for my relatively light duty requirements with sufficient bandwidth and sample size as well as decoding functions for the usual protocols (see the online data page on Rigol's site). The 'scope comes certified, with a recommended annual update (if you need certification); the self-calibration is probably good enough for my requirements.Waveforms can be stored on a USB stick for later analysis, and the scope can also be controlled remotely via USB (windows-only software included) or ethernet/lan (telnet commands). All documentation is available on the web, along with training videos on Rigol's site to get up to speed with this modern scope's capabilities.If you don't have deep pockets and need an MSO, this is a fantastic choice.
